Book Week – Oliver Phommavanh Visits

It’s Book Week!  A wonderful week to explore everything related to reading, writing and everything else bookish.

To kick off Book Week, 5B had a visit from super popular author, Oliver Phommavanh.

Year 5 have been enjoying Oliver’s books in Book Chat, with favourites being:

  • ConNerd
  • Thai-riffic!
  • The Other Christy
  • Don’t Follow Vee (brand new book!)

Oliver taught 5B many awesome tricks to write funny stories and students completed lots of fun activities designed to fire up the creative juices.

What do you love? What’s a problem that could happen with the thing you love? What’s an even worse problem that could happen?
What are some conflicts that could occur between the main characters in your story?
What is the worst thing that could happen on the worst camp ever?
Sensible photo
Silly photo!

What is one thing you learnt from Oliver about writing?

Library Fun in Term One!

Welcome to another year of reading in the library!

Year 5 students have had an action packed start to library in 2019 with lots of new learning taking place.

This term, students have refreshed their understanding of genres, set up a whole suite of library apps (audio books are a big hit at the moment for many students!) and began to compile To Read Lists based on recommendations from teachers and peers.

Library apps we use in Year 5

What’s on your To Read List?

The action will continue in Term 2 with the Carey Celebrates Literature Festival, where author and illustrator, Mark Wilson will speak to Year 5 students and run workshops with each class.

Please check the individual student blogs to read the Term 1 Library Reflections from each student.  Students were asked to reflect on their favourite genre as well as the Book Chat books they have enjoyed so far this term.

Which genre of books do you like to read and why?
