6BL – MasterChef 2020

While learning from home, 6BL took the time this week to complete the #MasterChefChallenge

Let us know your thoughts in the comments below. We look forward to seeing everyone back at school in the coming weeks!

What have you been doing at home during the online learning period?

What is something you’re looking forward to in your return to school?

Welcome to 6BL!

Welcome to 6BL for 2020!

We’ve had a busy start to begin our final year of primary school! Already, some of those things include:

  • Getting to know our peers & teachers
  • Meeting our Prep Buddies
  • Year 6 ‘Lead Yourself into the Future’ – Conference
  • APS & PE
  • House Swimming Trials
  • Leadership Assembly

Again, our blogs in Year 6 will provide a platform to share our learning with our peers, teachers, parents and the rest of the world. Please pop into our class and individual blogs and leave comments on our experiences and learning in our final year of primary school.

It is always important to remember the blogging protocols for posting and leaving effective comments. These can be found on our learning management system, Canvas under ‘Year 6’ and ‘Blogs’.

We look forward to hearing from all our families, friends and connections around the world as we post our journey, learning and highlights throughout the year.

6BL Out!

What are you looking forward to most in Year 6 this year?

Toona – I’m on my way, so hold tight!

Last week, 5B had their first Toona experience, visiting our school camp on the Gippsland lakes in Victoria. We had an amazing week, approaching all activities with a positive attitude. Some of our highlights included:

  • Kayaking
  • Bike Riding
  • Koala and Kangaroo spotting
  • Camping
  • Campfire games
  • King Ball
  • Ga Ga Ball
  • The famous ‘Shoe Game’
  • Police Boat visit
  • Fishing and boat rides

And this is only just scratching the surface on our action-packed week of adventure! Throughout the week, we recorded a music video to the song ‘Coming Home’ by Australian band Sheppard. We chose this song, as we think Toona is the heart and home of our school, as it allows us to demonstrate school’s attributes and develop important skills outside the classroom. Watch the video below and tell us what you think!

We must really pass on our thanks and gratitude to several people to making this the most incredible week.

  • Josh, Grace and Jesse from Outdoor Ed – you supported and pushed us through every challenge.
  • Em and Charlie, our fantastic Year 11s – you showed incredible initiative and ran so many fun and challenging activities, and we enjoyed getting to know you.
  • Mrs Collins – you were there for every step of our activities and were kind, supportive, funny and encouraging.
  • Trish – you’re food was top notch! #wewanttrish

We can’t wait until we get the chance to head back to Toona next year!

Have you ever been to Toona, or a similar camp before?

What were your favourite activities, and what attributes did you need to display to work with others and experience success at the activities?

Worldwide Blogging Challenge – Avatar Week

After some great success in our school ‘Comment Bonanza Month’, 5B have taken up the challenge to join the Student Blogging Challenge throughout the month of October.

5B are really looking forward to making some connections with similar classes and students across the globe. If you are visiting our blog, or an Australian blog for the first time – welcome!

I am Mr. Benwell, the teacher of 5B, and this is my avatar. I created this using Bitmoji from my apple device.

It looks like me as my hair is red, and looks like the clothes that I wear to school every day, except on a Wednesday when we have sports.

As we are from Melbourne in Australia, the animals are perfect. Although you might think it, we don’t have kangaroos and wombats in our backyards!

However, 5B is about to go to camp this week. As we are headed to the country, we expect to see Australian animals! We are hopeful of seeing wombats, kangaroos and should definitely see echidnas and koalas as they are very common in the place we are headed.

Feel free to connect with any of the 5B students, or with our class by commenting on this post. We will hopefully have some fantastic stories to share with you next week from camp.

Tell us about you and your class below in the comments!

Welcome to Ballarat!

5B’s fantastic research, design and hard-work has culminated in an incredible life-like representation of the Ballarat diggings in the 1850s. We are all proud of what we have been able to produce, and how well we have worked with our partners, and with our collective class team.

We have also worked to program a Sphero robot to take a guided tour of main street and the diggings. Here’s an example of what we’ve been able to achieve!

Can you name any of the landmarks in our diorama?

Can you recognise any Ballarat 1850s buildings?

Book Week

5B were right into the spirit of Book Week, with the class dressing up as favourite book characters, or within the theme, ‘Reading is My Super-Power!’

There were several highlights this action-packed Week 6 including:

  • Two birthdays!
  • A visit from author, Oliver Phommavanh
  • Applying the finishing touches to our Gold Rush Dioramas
  • Athletics Trials & APS
  • Fractions Games
  • Newspaper Writing

How many of the characters from our class can you name?

If you dressed up for Book Week, who did you dress up as, and why?

Book Week – Oliver Phommavanh Visits

It’s Book Week!  A wonderful week to explore everything related to reading, writing and everything else bookish.

To kick off Book Week, 5B had a visit from super popular author, Oliver Phommavanh.

Year 5 have been enjoying Oliver’s books in Book Chat, with favourites being:

  • ConNerd
  • Thai-riffic!
  • The Other Christy
  • Don’t Follow Vee (brand new book!)

Oliver taught 5B many awesome tricks to write funny stories and students completed lots of fun activities designed to fire up the creative juices.

What do you love? What’s a problem that could happen with the thing you love? What’s an even worse problem that could happen?
What are some conflicts that could occur between the main characters in your story?
What is the worst thing that could happen on the worst camp ever?
Sensible photo
Silly photo!

What is one thing you learnt from Oliver about writing?

What does this image represent?

When you look at this image, what do you think of?

Is it something to do with roads and speed limits?

Or do you think of all the mathematical things to do with the number 180?

Currently, when 5B think of the number 180, they think of the 180 blog comments they’ve received so far in ‘Comment Bonanza Month’. Two of our students have 14 comments each!

How are you and your class tracking?

Year 5 Camp – Sovereign Hill

Our Year 5 cohort has recently returned from a terrific camp at Sovereign Hill. Some highlights over the three days of camp included:

  • MADE Museum
  • Two days at Red Hill National School – 1850s style learning!
  • Aura Sound and Light Show
  • Gold Panning
  • Walking the diggings and learning about different occupations
  • Learning about the way people lived in 1850 and how it impacted Melbourne today

The feedback of how our class interacted and engaged throughout the 3 days was terrific. It was a hands-on way to immerse ourself in the 1850s and learn by doing.

It would be remiss not to thank a few people for our experience. Firstly, to Ma’am (Mrs. Baker), for giving us an authentic experience in Red Hill National School and it was like we were actually in the 1850s. We all learned so much from you, enjoyed the activities, and enjoyed how you cared for us and made us laugh. Also, to Miss Maxwell, who spent lots of time with our class over the three days. Without you, our camp and experience wouldn’t have been so positive.

We are now looking forward to applying what we’ve learned to create our own representation of the 1850s in our Gold Rush dioramas at school.

Have you ever been to Sovereign Hill before?

What PLAs did you use?

What are some facts you know about the Ballarat Gold Rush & Eureka Stockade?

Comment Bonanza Month Challenge

In August, 5B will be competing in ‘Comment Bonanza Month’ at school. This is a challenge open to all upper primary classes in order to see which individual and class can receive the most comments in the month of August. See the challenge explained below:
